Demis Russos, the universally acclaimed Greek singer, died Sunday
morning at the age of 68, leaving behind him a rich repertoire of songs that
have made it around the globe.
Born on 15 June 1946 in Alexandria to a Greek father and an
Egyptian-Italian mother, Demis Russos was raised in the Egyptian city until the
Suez Crisis of 1956 when the family lost all its possessions and moved to
Greece.
His multicultural background helped him bring different influences into
his music.
As a singer, Russos sold over 60 million records worldwide. One of the reasons behind that is his early start.
When 17, Russos joined a band named “The Idols.” And in 1967, he
would join Aphrodite Child Band. He would also sing and act as a bassist with
Vangelis and Sideras.
Russos began his solo career in 1971 with the song “We Shall Dance.”
Initially unsuccessful, the song helped him get a tenacious fame in Europe. But
the following single “Forever and Ever” would bring his fame in Europe later on
in 1973.
Songs like my “Only Fascination,” “Far Away,” “Ever and Ever,” and “Man
of The World” have played in all worlds’ radios.
Over the last few months, many great artists have left us. Loo Reed, Paco de Lucia, and Demis Russos left this world. Ram Papa Pam is what is left!!
